Looking Backward is a history newsletter dedicated to the idea that we can better understand the tumult of the present by examining it through the lens of the past. In original, deeply-researched essays, interviews, and reviews, I look for the long view on issues like climate change, gun control, pandemics, and women’s rights. I’m interested in stories we’ve forgotten, context we’ve overlooked, and connections between where we’ve been and where we might go.
